Great idea Stephanie, thanks for sharing. If you have direct deposit and they let you split it between accounts it makes it really easy... This is also a great way to save for retirement.

Our school recently had a speaker on budgeting and he went over a good way to save for things. PAY YOURSELF. When you get paid each month start taking out $5-$10 each paycheck and put it aside, in a savings account, in a jar, etc. This way atleast something is being saved. You can also increase the amount as bills get paid off or what you can comfortably put aside. Budgeting is hard to stick to but little things add up.

I agree with you and I have similar failures. Most important for me has been to come up with a family budget or spending plan that we can use. In order to save for vacations, repairs, etc.

Keep at it,

Hi Tammie,
It sounds as if your 5 year old has you really stressed out! I have a friend with a 4 year old calling most of the shots! Well my advice to her is too stop yelling, it doesn't work. Ignoring some of his obnoxious behavior as well and be consistent with your disipline. Have family meetings, develop a routine and each person keep up with their part. I would also suggest having your son seen by a pediatrician. Kids will test your limits and do whatever they can get away with. My friends grandaughter tells her she doesn't do the timeouts because she doesn't want to! Then the yelling and spankings begin. This pattern didn't just start, so it will take some patience and routine changes to get it to stop, but first have him seen by a physician. Good luck!

I developed a meal planner on Word. I basically have a different "Theme" each day....Meatless Modays, Sandwich/Soup Sundays, etc. Then when I go to look for recipes I am not overwhelmed. I can just look for my theme. I also created my own recipe folder. I just bought a binder and added clear protectors. I then divided the binder up into sections (red meat, chicken, italian, etc. Whenever I find a good recipe, I just print it, try it, and if the majority like it, I file it into the correct section in my cookbook. Works great!

A dream seed...I just love that imagery. As parents our job is to water that seed and make sure it gets all the sunshine it needs to grow. My son has ADHD, which means he has special learning needs. Making sure he grows up to meet his full potential will require a lot of work and support, but that is our job as parents. If we let him know that there might be limits on what he can achieve, he will achieve only so much. Instead, we choose to tell him that he is smart and can do ANYTHING he wants. If he wants to be a dog catcher (last week's "dream" job), he can do that. But if he wants to be an astronaut, he can do that too. Thanks for the reminder.

I think that if the children are of school age , if possible
they should choose a day or two to be crreative and think up a plan of thier own and if it needs guidance we can always give it.

A summer schedule is essential. For the first time in years, I have 6 summer weeks off...to write and declutter, I hope! It scares me a little bit. I don't want to waste a minute of it...so I will schedule in even time in the sun!

Very well done Susan. These characteristics along with being sincerely engaged in all aspects of the lives of your children are key ingredients in a strong family.

If our families fail to succeed, so goes our society.

This issue is so gravely important yet the value we place on our families in our society is lacking.

Keep up the great work.

I would agree 100% with that statement - families that have a common faith based practice are better connected, have a feeling of community/connectedness and will likely feel part of something much bigger than themselves - always a plus when raising children!

You are right as well, NOTHING guarantees anything! You can put your best effort forward in providing stability, consistency and a feeling of unity in a family - and pray!

Thanks for this this post and comments. True, these characteristics won't guarantee a healthy family, but one thing is sure, these are characteristics common among healthy families. It just makes sense to want to emulate them.

One question: other studies on strong families have indicated that faith and religious practice play an important role. Do you agree? Care to comment?
